AAI333 - Blogging Assignment 2

For my second listening journal, I've decided to do something a little off from what we are doing, the use of quarter tones in music. Firstly, what are quarter tones? Using logical deduction, semi tones = half of a tone, and hence, a quarter tone will be half of a semitone, which is not on our conventional pitch that we know off using the piano as our reference to pitches.

So, first up, i'd like to start off with this short clip by Diesel Bodine where he talks and introduces us to quarter tones and the showcase of one of his compositions that he incorporates the use of a quarter tone.



For this listening review, I have listened to three movements of the piece titled 'Three Quarter Tone pieces' by Charles Ives. I. Largo, II. Allegro & III. Chorale

In my very honest opinion, I would say that my ears and brain are not very much in-tuned to quarter-tones which hence, caused me a little headache and disturbance when I was listening to them. The music itself was not too much of an issue, but with the use of quarter-tones, the aural stability had been disrupted due to the alterations of the intervals between tones. This also led me to thinking that it was quite a paradox to still call the movement a chorale!

However, after coming to 'terms' with quarter-tones produced, I also realised that this could be a way to keep listeners intrigued, to not only the musical aspect of a piece such as the melodic contours and harmonies, but the fundamental that caused music to happen - SOUND. This perhaps also allow us to 'appreciate' what is 'IN-TUNE' and 'OUT OF TUNE' in our usual context. However, in this case, it also brings us to relook at what 'out of tune' is, because we are now in a different context, and the use of quarter-tones are in fact the key factor that holds this piece together. The work above is played by two pianist, with the piano on the left (the smaller piano) tuned a quarter tone sharper. Juxtaposed against the other piano that is tuned to standard pitch, it thus effectively brings out the audio effects of quarter tones.

Besides the use of quarter tones, I realised that this piece is not held by a single key, which I would view it as the use of pitch centres instead. There are instances of chromatic scalic passage as well as recurring intervals in the second movement while in others, sustained harmonies create intensed vibrations, bringing out the quarter-tone effects once again.


II. What I Found Out:
The growth of this piece was credited to a large extend to Charles Ives' father, who started experimenting with pitches. His father had perfect pitch, yet it disturbed him as he constantly played around on the piano and exploring dissonances created. When questioned the reason why, he said "I may have absolute pitch, but thank God, that piano hasn't". This led him the the continuation and exploration of this from father to child, leaving Ives's curiosity to participate in this as well. Theories of quarter-tones were looked into and he studied the different numerical relations, which contributed to the earlier sketches of this work. An essay, 'Some Quarter-Tone Impressions' was also written by Ives as he wrote the piece in proper as well.


About this piece:
Both first and third movements ('Largo' and 'Chorale')  were initially written for one piano, with two keyboards tuned a quarter-tone apart, which however, having the two-piano approached adopted eventually. The two movements focuses on harmony and has a characteristic of hymn-like music, so as to allow time for the ears to 'absorb the complexities of the strange quarter-tone hybrid chords'. Besides having the chordal accompaniment, there exists a melodic line that is passed from one piano to another, both of different tunings. 


The second movement is somewhat a bridge that holds the previous movement 1 and the third movement later. This movement is a contrast of the previous two, as it is high-spirited and splits rhythmically the two pianos. 'The quarter-tone interplay bends the ear and tickles the mind'. 


All in all, Ives classified the three movements as "an homage to his inventive father: 'The quarter-tone family, like most other families, has a sense of humor. But that's a rather dangerous thing to refer to; it depends as much on where the catcher's mitt is as on the pitcher's curves.' (Ives)"

AAI333 - Blogging Assignment 1

Hello everyone!

Finally here to share my FIRST listening experience...

So yes, this semester brings us to opening our ears to be more receptive and accepting of what we seemed 'foreign' from our tonal world and that is, music from the twentieth-century! With that, I've decided to have a closer listen to one of the works by Bela Bartok, one of the prominent composers of that era.

Chanced upon his work titled "Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta" and its title attracted me a little. Prior to even first listening to the music, I tried to form an aural impression of how this piece might even sound like, since it's not our usual 'music for the orchestra' setting. Well, the word "Percussion" suggested to me that it could be something percussive, rhythmic and perhaps even the jumbling up of different percussion instruments with their various timbres! And all these accompanying and interacting with the strings. Well, of course I was not entirely right and imagination will always be an imagination and here's how the actual work sounds!



I. LISTENING REVIEW:
To my surprise, this work consists of FOUR movements. So here it goes:

First Movement:
The very first impression that i had upon listening to this was the eerie feeling that one would get from watching a horror show! This atmosphere is perhaps formed by the style of playing the strings throughout - the dark tone produced, with sustaining melodic lines played that forms layers together forming melodic interactions and sometimes they also end up forming harmonies if we take into the point of 'hearing' vertically. I liked how the way the different lines pass on from one section to another through the different registers and then thickening the texture through this process. This movement came to the climax upon the first entrance of the percussion instruments - the triangle giving it a surge of energy, making it seem like it was going to reach the climax, until we hear the timpani row with the crescendo that bring us to a higher point and then the strings continuing the lines before coming to the end of the roll yet continued by the strings' emphasis on the repeated "E" that was played. This form of prolongation of the moments of climax somewhat relates to our understanding of 'phrase extension' and to expand the whole section. However, the moments of climaxes do not seem very definite to my personal listening as i felt that they come and fade off rather quickly, yet seamlessly. There were no sudden pauses whenever the climaxes were reached but simply back off once they passed those indicative points. After spinning through in and out of these moments, the theme returns, with the similar texture used in the opening (although now at a higher register). The thick texture also disappeared inconspicuously, leaving the thin texture created by a particular melodic line that was heard in the beginning. Felt like the whole movement was a cycle and ends at the same point! Idea of symmetry?

Second Movement:
Just as I was expecting something to develop from perhaps the first movement, I was caught by the very rhythmic feel right from the start of this movement! I would say that this movement is a contrast from the first, in terms of the various aspects:
-tempo much quicker here,
-tone colour - much brighter compared to the dark and sustaining lines we hear in the first movement. Timbres of different instruments also helped to brightened this movement - the use of timpani is more percussive now and there is the use of snare drum (and i think higher toms).
-rhythm: the previous meandering lines now replaced by the percussive characteristic, giving it more vertical than horizontal movements upon listening.
What i thought was pretty interesting was the pretty long passage of pizzicato used by the strings, which has its similar effect created by the repeated notes to create that rhythmic intensity all the way till the end of this movement.

Third Movement:
Personally, I am beginning to be puzzled at the direction this piece seems to take - we are now back to another slow movement with its beginning feeling like a fresh new piece that was unrelated to the previous two? Anyhow, we are back at the mysterious feel, this time created first by the repeated 'F' played by the xylophone (a percussion instrument) and then later there seems to be a question-an-answer between the different strings instrument, all these with the presence of the timpani rolling that uses the pitch bending effect. The later use of the strings instruments at the high registers (i'm guessing is the effect of sliding along the strings) also created that mysterious on top of the melodic line played by the violin at the high register. Later on we also hear the contrasts between the timbres of the strings instruments (violins against the lower strings and harp if I'm not wrong) during the pizzicato section. This portion was also contrasted by the bowed section, resulting in the different sounds produced via the different performance techniques. The ending is marked by the return of the beginning theme, where the xylophone plays a repeated high note accompanied by the sustained note on the timpani. This also gives us a feeling of a symmetry, where the start and the end seems to be at the same point (cyclic).

Fourth Movement:

We first hear the striking strumming of the strings producing harmonies - which somehow reminds me of a ukelele. This movement gives a dance-liked feel generally, which was later disrupted by the use of repeated notes by the piano and later on has this motif repeated by the violins and the two parts placed against each other before entering a fury of running notes and settling down on a sustained harmony produced by, i believe the organ?, where the strings change its style to the long sustaining, with familiar harmonies heard earlier. Towards the end of the movement, snippets of the dance-like movement emerged once again before charging its way to the end of the movement and piece! (however somewhat abrupt to me...)

II. What I found out:
Thanks to some netizens that could help give me some insight through internet research, below is what I have read from analysis of the piece.

The first movement of this piece is actually a fugue! A great example to show a classical form used in the 20th Century. In this movement, there is a frequent use of meter changes as well as irregular meters such as ‘5/8’, ‘7/8’ and ‘10/8. This variable meter has allowed for the passage to sound seamless in terms of metric, giving us no apparent regular meter Also, in terms of pitch, this movement iss centred on pitch class A, where the beginning and ending lands.

In this fugue, the melody is churned out from this 5-note germ motive that goes up a third followed by the use of other intervals. The subjects enters successively in circles of fifths (via direct imitation) while the answer enters in the reverse direction ie. Fifth lower. This results in having a subject or answer on each of the 12 pitch classes. The movement of the subject and answer lines could be demonstrated as follow:

Subject:
A ----- E ------ B ------ F# (Gb) ------ C# (Db) ------ Ab -----Eb

Answer:
A ----- D ------ G ------ C -------------- F--------------- Bb ------Eb


We can see that both lines start off with A and ends of with Eb, a significant interval to take note, as it forms a tritone with A. It is not of convention to have a tritone being the climax of the piece, before the music drops in terms of energy level. As the music leaves the climax, the melodic lines move in retrograde inversion in the case where the subject line moves down a forth while answer line moves up a fifth so that both lines return to the starting point, A. To differentiate the energy level, dynamics was created through the use of texture. This could be seen when instruments are added as the passage develops, increasing the dynamics gradually as the texture thickens towards the climax Eb, and having instruments dropping out, leaving a thin texture as the passage returns to its pitch centricity A.

It was right to say that there is some sense of symmetry in my first hearing. But little did I realized that symmetry is one of the compositional factor that Bartok has used in this piece.

From the above, the movement of the subject and answer towards the climax and then back to pitch centre A forms a symmetry. This is also accompanied by the use of dynamics where it is complementary to the movement of the melodic lines, opening up towards the climax, and then decrescendo (together with the closing effect) towards unison A.

Erno Lendvai claimed that Fibonacci numbers and Golden Sections have been used in this piece, as well as other pieces of Bartok. Fibonacci numbers is an arithmetic sequence where each number is equal to the sum of the previous two. Eg. ‘ 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, …’He noted that there are relations formed with the intervals used as well as successive intervals used within chords and chords progressively involving the Fibonacci numbers. These include the recurrence of minor third, major second, perfect fourth and other intervals used. The ‘Golden Section’, or better known as the ‘Golden Ratio’ is a number that the Fibonacci Sequence will tend towards as it increases. I would not go on to explain the use of these two relations as it may not be relevant. It did intrigued me as I've seen this number elsewhere, with maths as my second AS. However, it is important to note that both the Fibonacci Numbers and Golden Sections are important numbers to Mathematicians and they are also important numbers that contribute to aesthetics and exists in nature. They are also used in architecture and found in many art works; besides, it is used in the 16th and 17th Century in the design of musical instruments as well as a system of tuning derived based on it.



Other points that I have noted:
-movement II, ‘allegro’ has a form of a sonata.
- movement III, ‘adagio’ : it has a similar symmetrical design as compared to the first movement, where the arch structure: A B C D C B A is used, having section ‘D’ as the point of reflection to form the symmetry. The above structure could also be regrouped as |A B| C D|C+B A|, forming [A][B][A’] structure.
-movement IV, ‘allegro molto’: Also based upon the tonality A (similar to movement I)
-the entire piece (movements 1-4) also forms a symmetry where:

as such, we can conclude that the use of 'symmetry' is a fundamental key that holds this piece together, within and across movements.

Term Project updates...

Okay, this shall be my journal for this term's project as well. After much thoughts, i guess i will settle on analysing a band piece since i'm such a 'band-person' and analysing one work would probably be more relevant... Will definitely look into other 20th Century Music, and i will leave that for this little avenue in the later posts for BLOGGING ASSIGNMENT!

Was making a choice between David Maslanka's "Give us this day (short symphony) but decided that i would settle on...
"Gloriosa" Symphonic Poem for Band by Yasuhide Ito.
I have played this piece with NTU Symphonic Band for...ALMOST A YEAR (here and there), performed publicly during our concert series, Sojourn 2009, and the second time on an international platform at the World Music Contest 2009, so it definitely brings back memories and getting to the details of the piece would be less difficult since I've been aurally accustomed (or rather) to the piece. HAHA. but i'm pretty sure the analysis part will still be a headache because it's a whole new level besides mere aural reception!

-This work is composed to show the composers' view 'of the musical and philosophical combination of Japanese and western culture', in hope to find a 'balance between Japanese traditions and Western styles'.
-Composer's interest & context of composition: the history of Nagasaki and the music of Hidden Christians of the 'Edo Period' (1603- 1867) that have caused the influences of Christianity to Japan, which thus resulted in many 'japanised' gregorian chants...
-Gregorian chants and Japanese folk tunes are themes used and developed through the piece.
(will read up on the context for further understanding/ explanation!)

German 6th (Ger +6) comprises notes of: b6, 1, b3, #4

YOU RAISE ME UP.

AT LAST!!

A little background…

An uplifting song with an inspiration mould, this is one of the more popular songs in pop music written by Rolf Lovland and lyrics by Brendan Graham. So many people has sung and re-sung it, and it has been covered for more than 125 times today! The most popular version we have been listening to is probably by Josh Groban, and one of the latest release’s by Westlife – which is the video you’ve just watched above (if you did..). So, now, we shall take a closer look at what this song comprises of ..

The analysis begins..
(Note: I have analysed in detail, 3 pages of the score, but the remaining pages, 4&5 are there to illustrate the areas that I’ll be touching on.. )


Melody

In this piece, the melody line is basically held by two parts, namely the verse and the chorus. They are symmetrical as each of the verse and chorus contains 8 bars.

The verse starts at where I have indicated [A] section. We see that the melody has a gentle contour, restricted movement going up and coming down in each subphrase (2bars) – generally step-wise. The melody is slow, each subphrase gets higher and ends off with a sustained note after moving downwards from the contour at each subphrase – which I believe is intentional to create the intensity as well as emotions/ lethargy suggested by the lyrics (e.g. “wea-ry”, “burdened be..”, “si-lence”, “sit a while with me..”). In the third subphrase, the Bflat reaches the highest note of Eflat, which I believe is to prepare us for the chorus.

For the chorus, it starts with a pick-up into the bar indicated [B]. The contour is also generally gentle, but there is an increasing intent as the melody moves up to Eflat (tonic) somehow creating a ‘climax’, and this happens for each subphrase.

Chord Progression
I have indicated the chord progressions on the score in blue. By and large, the chords used in this piece are I, IV, V chord. However, the composer plays around with various chord positions (e.g. use of first, second inversions- I6, I6/4, IV6, V4/3) and introduces chordal 7th and 9th in the chords. (e.g. IV with the 9th, V7 ). There is a use of vi chords in the chorus at the part where the melody reaches the ‘climax’. I would perceive it as the composer wants to reach a higher point, out of the I, IV, V chords that he has used, in order to create that ‘climax’ – something that is unexpected looking at the usual I, IV, V chord patterns throughout the piece.

Harmonic Function
Below the chord progressions, I have identified the harmonic function as well. Hopefully it is right. In short, the Tonic function is most commonly used and usually is used between Predominant to Dominant. In the verse, [A] section, the progression is generally
T---—---PD-D---PD---T—PD-T—D—T
while in the chorus, [B] section, the harmonic function is
PD—D—T—D—PD—--T—D—T-PD—T—PD—T—D—T.
There are some changes in the next half of the piece, which can be seen in the score.

I noticed that each section ends off on a perfect cadence - the use of Dominant-Tonic harmonic function is seen.

Harmonic Rhythm
The harmonic rhythm in this piece is rather slow, yet consistent. In [A], I feel that that harmonic rhythm is slower so as to creates the mellow feel for the opening. There is a change in harmony for every two beats generally. At the [A’] section, the harmonic rhythm is somewhat faster than the beginning, perhaps to keep the momentum and increasing it as the song progresses into the climax.

Structure & Form
As mentioned before, this song is held by two ‘themes’ – verse and chorus. The rest of the piece is basically the ‘written out repeats’. However, the song does not seem boring because the ‘written out repeats’ from [A] & [B], marked by [A’] and [B’] occurs in different keys. In the first set, it starts in Eflat major, and as the song moves on to the second set, it modulates to the key of Fmajor, which I have indicated by the change of keys. Why Fmajor? A key higher, and also, it creates a ‘brighter’ tone as we moved away from the initial sad and gloomy mood in [A] (looking at the lyrics), more uplifting I would say.

After the second set { [A'] & [B’] } ends, the chorus is repeated AGAIN but this time it moves to the key of Gflat major. And at the arrival at the second repeated B section marked [B’’], I feel that it serves as to bring us to the climax of the piece. In the same section, the chorus is then repeat yet again, which I believe is reiterative. Also, the use of repeated chorus is typical of pop songs. Finally, looking at the repeats, the song would have ended at the (*) sign. But from the last four bars with an up-beat, the inspirational phrase is sung for the last time – “you raise me up, to more than I can be…”. I would see that section as an elaboration in the musical aspect, but for this song per se, I think it is a statement used to end the song.

From bird’s eye view, we have the structure as follow:
[A] [B] [A’] [B’] [B’’] [B’’]

Phrase Structure
As this song is highly repetitive in terms of melody line, I have indicated the phrase structures for the verse and chorus sections, [A] & [B] only.

In [A], 8 bars forming a simple period – 4 in antecedent & 4 in consequent, thus symmetrical. Also, for each phrase, I hear two different sub-phrases present (indicated by green, thin pen). They are also symmetrical, because each sub-phrase lasts about two bars. Therefore, it’s (2+2) (2+2) forming a simple period.

In [B], there is a sentence in that 8 bar phrase. Short-short-long for (2+2+4) bars indicated in orange. Also, in the sentence, I hear a simple period of (2+2) bars under the ‘long’ phrase.

Texture, decorations and others:
This piece is generally homophonic. Since this piece is generally repetitive, the composer does make use of other elements to make the piece sound different in each repeat. In the beginning, [A], the song starts off with a solo voice accompanied by the piano providing simple chords, and the violin was introduced in [B] to thicken the texture. The [A’] section is led by the violin solo, making the repeat somewhat familiar but slightly different due to different instrumentation. Also, in [B’’] section in Gflat major, there is the choir at the background, thus thickening the texture even further, forming the climax of the song. I believe instrumentation plays a role in making pop songs (usually repetitive) interesting.

There is the use of melodic decorations which I have indicated (*) on the scores. Some examples are the (accented) passing note (A.P.N) and auxiliary note (A.N).
